in the Augustinian Abbey
in Staré Brno, rental reservation
From the original greenhouse in the Augustinian Abbey, where GJ Mendel carried out his experiments with peas in the 19th century and laid the foundations of genetics, only the foundations remain today. However, an exceptional space connecting history, present and future, as well as science and faith, is created directly on them.
Watch the time-lapse video of how the construction of the greenhouse took place from the very beginning. The entire construction took place during 2022, i.e. in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of GJ Mendel. The construction of the greenhouse represents the rules of Mendel’s genetic principles, and in it you can find, for example, a glass work of art representing Mendel’s handwriting, or a model of the Hrachovina monument on a scale of 1:10.
The new Mendel greenhouse by architectural studio Chybík+Krištof copies the original floor plan and orientation, it will house a permanent exhibition of Mendel’s legacy, and will host conferences, lectures, banquets, exhibitions and concerts. Above all, however, peas will be grown here “like in the old days” – and yet in the most modern way, in aeroponic flower pots. The pea that, through the abbot and brilliant scientist GJ Mendel, stood at the birth of genetics.
